Prostate Cancer Awareness Month 2025

Unlike other types of cancer, prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer that develops over the course of many years. This makes it harder to spot as symptoms are often less likely until it has already progressed into prostate cancer. The key to effective treatment is early detection. With more than 50,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, it is both our job and your job to educate and raise awareness of prostate cancer so your washroom users can seek treatment if needed. Learn more about the symptoms of prostate cancer and how washroom managers can make a difference this Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

What is Prostate Cancer in Men?

Prostate cancer is a malignant tumour developing in the prostate gland of men. It occurs when cells in the prostate grow uncontrollably, potentially spreading to other parts of the body. There are many risk factors that can affect the development of prostate cancer including age, family history and ethnicity. In fact, 1 in 4 Black men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year compared to only 1 in 8 men in the UK.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms

The main problem with detecting prostate cancer early is the fact that symptoms are often minimal or non-existent. In most cases, prostate cancer may only begin to present itself once the prostate is large enough to affect the urethra - the tub that carries urine from the bladder out of the penis.

Some common symptoms of prostate cancer include:

  • An increased need to pee
  • Straining while peeing
  • Feeling like your bladder is not fully emptied after peeing

If you suspect you have any of these symptoms, get in touch with your local GP immediately to ensure you get the advice and treatment you need.

Prostate Cancer Test and Diagnosis

There is no one test for detecting prostate cancer. Your GP will work with you to choose the right test for your needs. Typically, a GP will first ask to:

  • Take a urine sample to check for infection
  • Take a blood sample to test your level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), also known as PSA testing
  • Have a physical examination of your prostate

These tests will give the GP a better understanding of whether you have prostate cancer and inform the next steps you should take. If these results indicate you have a raised PSA level or other abnormalities, you may have to go through further testing including:

  • An MRI scan
  • A biopsy

Prostate Cancer Treatment

If you are in the early stages of prostate cancer, chances are you may not need immediate treatment. GPs will usually recommend keeping an eye on the progress of the cancer as you likely have no symptoms so no treatment is needed.

As the cancer progresses, treatments will typically include surgically removing the prostate or using radiotherapy to destroy the cancer cells. If the cancer is spotted early enough, these treatments can be used to cure prostate cancer.

If the cancer has developed to a later stage, treatment may switch from removing the cancer cells to prolonging life and relieving symptoms.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is held in March every year. It aims to educate men about prostate health and early detection to ensure anyone with symptoms can receive the treatment they need as early as possible. Supported by charities such as Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillan Cancer Support, this campaign highlights the risks, screening importance and support service available in the UK.

It encourages men over 50, particularly those with family history, as well as people who were assigned male at birth to discuss prostate health with their healthcare provider. With various events held across the UK such as March the Month, health talks and community outreach, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month works to reduce stigma, increase understanding and promote regular check-ups.

But how can you, as a washroom manager, help the cause?

How Washroom Managers Can Raise Prostate Cancer Awareness

You may not realise the crucial role a washroom can play in raising awareness of prostate cancer but we’re here to show you your unrealised potential. From informational displays in washrooms to working collaboratively with local charities, here are just some examples of how you can get involved in Prostate Cancer Awareness Month this year.

  • Informational Displays: Educational posters can be placed in your washroom to raise awareness of the common symptoms of prostate cancer and information on where to get help. From posters on the back of toilet doors to informational materials in washrooms, sharing educational pieces and early detection information can be the key to helping people spot the early signs of prostate cancer.

  • Fundraising Initiatives: Donation drives are a great way to spread the word about Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. By creating collection points for charity contributions, hosting a bake sale or organising workplace awareness events, you can get people talking about prostate cancer and reduce the stigma surrounding it.

  • Employee Support: It’s not always easy to ask for help. With informational leaflets about screenings, health check-ups and prostate cancer support, you can encourage male employees to discuss prostate health with their healthcare provider.

  • Working with Local Charities: By working with local health organisations and local charities, you can host a wide range of events to raise greater awareness of prostate cancer. For example, you could invite medical professionals to your workplace to host talks and connect employees with helpful prostate cancer support resources.

  • Digital Communication: Spreading awareness can be as easy as clicking a button. With digital signage, newsletters and social media posts, you can promote health screening and support services this Prostate Cancer Awareness Month to show your staff, clients and visitors you care about their health.
